Shanty Competition

Ahoy mates!

Have you got a 🌊 sea shanty or sea ballad 🎻 the world needs to hear? A poem dedicated to the ocean maybe? Well the 🧜‍♂️ Bunbury Sea Shanty Festival 🧜‍♂️ are holding their "Write your own sea shanty competition" 🏆 once again.

Each entrant will perform their song or poem at the festival and will be scored by our panel of sea shanty experts.

Sea shanties will be scored by the following criteria:

Authenticity

Is it a real sea shanty that could be used to coordinate labour?

Songwriting

Is the song well written. Does it have a bit of Jack Tar character to it?

Musicianship

Is the song performed well.

Performer Engagement

What is the audiences reaction? Is the song engaging?

Sea Worthiness

Is it a song that could be sung multiple times without the shanty singer being thrown overboard?

Pirate Cred

Could it win over a pirate and save the shanty singer from being run through?
